Try on a NEW Occupation! |
This Sesame Street song is singn in my head…
"Who are the people in your neighborhood. In your neighborhood. They are the people that you meet while you are walking down the street. Say who are the people in your neighborhood."
Listen to it here:

Ya see…
I was chattn it up with a friend who is going through some confusing changes. And something that she is running into is this idea of WHO she is.
But...
That WHO she is is, is defined by WHAT she does.
For a living.
As an occupation.
Now...
I remember feeling this exact SAME way about 7 years ago.
Like who do I want to be.
"Occupation" wise.
Bc what I did.
Equaled Who I was.
I remember the Sesame Street song "Who are the people in your neighborhood." Ringing in my head.
I recall sitting, thinkn...
Who am I?
Am I the Postman?
Am I the Firefighter?
Am I the Nurse?
The visuals that came into my head, was of the coordinating Sesame Street
book we had in my house as kids.
As we would turn the pages we learned what each occupation did, looked like and their purpose in society.

My friend said she wanted to find the occupation that she could identify with.
I GET this.
But...
WE define the occupation.
The occupation doesn't define US.
Ever.
I told her to think of this...
If you met a limo driver would you say to yourself this is only a limo driver.
Would you assume that that is ALL they are?!?
No...
Why?!?
Bc...
Most limo drivers don't define themselves just as this. They have motorcycle collections, are weight lifters, horticulturists...
They are SOOOO much more :)))
People aren't JUST their occupation.
We KNOW this!
We KNOW this!
So why do we choose to define ourselves so much more harshly than others and say that's ALL we are?!?!
Don't get me wrong:
How you spend your time matters. The occupation you choose affects you. BUT it does not define you.

Ever.
Today, Try on a new occupation!
I made my friend laugh Bc I told her I try on different occupations all the time!
Even when I go to Starbucks I use different names!!!
