Kasha Varnishkes
A traditional Jewish dish that I am bringing to Rosh Hashannah :)
Here is the recipe my very best Jewish friend cooked with me!
Ingredients list:
1 Egg
Kasha (Medium whole-grain
buckwheat groat)
1 tbsp of butter
Stock (Chicken is the traditional, but Vegetarian is preferred ;)
3/4 pound bow tie pasta
Salt and ground pepper
2 tablespoons fresh parsley
How to:
Crack an egg in a bowl & beat it. Slowly pour the Kasha on top. Fold the Kasha over into the egg. Being sure to soak up all of the egg.
Put a tab of butter on a skillet set over high heat. Once, the better has melted and coated the pan, add the Kasha mixture.
Toast the Kasha.
Using a wooden flat spoon, flatten the Kasha mix into the bottom of the pan. Brown the Kasha until the egg has dried and is mostly separate. Continuing to turn the Kasha. You should begin smelling the nutty aroma of the Kasha. Toasting the Kasha seals the groats so that they are crunchy.
Empty can of Stock & bring to a boil. Cover and cook over low heat. Steaming the Kasha for about 10 minutes. Check to see if the kernels are tender and the liquid has been absorbed.
Meanwhile, in another pot boil the water for the bow tie pasta. Drain.
Add the Kasha to the bow ties.
Sprinkle with salt & grind with fresh pepper.
Chop fresh parsley to garnish!
Today, Happy Rosh! Hope your Jewish New Year is sweet :)
