PUNK ROCK SELF-HELP

Sex and the City: In Yo Face!

Tuesday, May 29, 2012

I felt the Sex and the City RUSH more than most broads in this city. I was a nightclub bartender in NYC when...
Sex and the City Took Over!!!

The Good:
All Female Entourages Hit the Streets of New York. Women were going out for a night on the town & footing their own bill! It was empowering! Sex and the City changed the club party patterns. In night life it became more common place to see a pack full of older single women partying & being financially independent. No longer did a gal have to wait at home for a suitor to call to take them out on the town. Sex and the City made it such that the Women knew where the hot spots were to Take the men!

It went from women ordering vodka sodas to a Ladies' Night of COSMOS!!!

The Ugly:
Sex and the City brought bar scenes into woman's homes so they felt more comfortable & like they belonged....

"Um... Hello, yes..I would like a COSMOOO, do you Know how to make it? Labrina our Samantha, likes hers more clear. Jules likes hers more pink, now isn't that soo Charlotte of her! Yep you guessed it: I'M THE CARRIE!!! So I want a lemon with mine bc it matches my new Blond Streaks!"

Shoot me in the face.

The Good:
Sex and the City brought bar scenes into woman's homes so they felt more comfortable & like they belonged. Women were ordering more. They KNEW what THEY wanted. No longer were they standing behind some guy & saying: "I dunno, order me whatever you're getting..." They Had THEIR Drink of choice!

The Ugly:
Their Drink of choice was Always served in a Martini glass...
Martini glasses are hard to stack. Martini glasses are impractical to serve. Once dirty, martini glasses are a bitch to clean, so at least one bitch a night would complain that some other bitch's lipstick stain was on her "COSMOOO glass".

Shoot me in the face.

The Good:
Women's fashion was becoming more Daring! More fashion forward & a FASTER turn around! Women would see it on the show & Have to be wearing it That weekend! Designers were starting to erupt from the T.V. screen onto the NYC nightclub dance floors!  And before nightclubs were geared toward younger generations. After the success of Sex and the City the ages of women raised. The median age of women in nightclubs was mid 30's where as before Sex and the City the median age was mid 20's.

The Ugly:
It was painful watching some of these grown women emulate these fictional characters...
& they still were NOT happy!

Women traveled to NYC in Droves in hopes of reliving the lives they saw on their T.V. screen. They dressed the part. Had the same jobs. Went to the same restaurants to eat the same foods. I served them the Same EXACT drinks but...
they still weren't having a Good Time!

Shoot me in the face.

The Good:
The Magic of Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte and even Miranda was that they Were Who They Were & RAN With It!!! They Never tried to be each other. Each one had their own fashion sense, vision, and set of opinions. Individual Individuality: That's what made each of them & the show Great!

The Ugly:
Too many women tried to BE them instead of being LIKE them. Women walked around wearing costumes in hopes of being sexy like Sex and the City.

Like Playing dress up in their mother's heals...but instead it was Carrie's heals!

...A made up character.
They played pretend at my bar in hopes of living out these fictional lives. These women were always chasing an idea outside of the reality of themselves.

Shoot me in the face.

The Good:
LOVE Sex and the City!!!
Heck, I Bought myself a pair of Christian Louboutin & a nameplate like Carrie wore in Season 5. I even wore a tutu as a dress :)))))
Besides watching EVERY Episode at least 3 times in my life!!!

The Ugly:
I did not LOVE EVERY GIRL at my bar WANTING TO BE SEX and the CITY!

If you didn't get into the club or can't fit in that dress size or can't afford those shoes it doesn't mean you don't belong :(

I think that is what broke my heart, the women who took the wrong message from Sex and the City & wanted to BE them instead of BE like them.

Shoot me in the face.

The Good:
We will NEVER BE A CARRIE.
We will NEVER BE A Samantha
We will NEVER BE A Charlotte.
& God help us if we ever become a Miranda! (No one wants to be a Miranda! Lol)

The Shoot me in the...Hold off on the shooting here...Bc I wanna shoot off my mouth ;)
Isn't that true with everything...We can emulate people and take characteristics we like from others but we Have to remember to let US shine through :) bc that's what makes us special & interesting!

You are the best Carrie, Miranda, Samantha, Charlotte HYBRID!!!!

Why WANT to be a Carrie when you could be a Tamara, Jonathan, Lee, Ashley, Michael, Sabrina, Diego, Cabiria...

Just BE you :)

Bc when you try to pretend to BE someone you are not it Never looks pretty...

Today, think of all the people you emulate. Where do they exist? In person, on-line, media... Is your fashion sense heavily influenced by T.V., magazines, blogs, films? Where do you search to find the "hip" places to go out to dance, eat, hang? Do you consider yourself "hip"? Is there a T.V. Show that makes you feel "hip & in the know"? Which character on Sex and the City did you most identify with? What did you like & dislike from each character? Who had the best style? & the worst? What about apartments & love life's??? Sex and the City was a FUN show. But it is just that, a show.

Bc trust me...at the end of a real life "Sex and the City Night", there was always a missing false eye lash, half clipped hair extension, lost phone, broken heal & one fresh pile of pink puke!

So...be unadulterated YOU!
