Growing up, my mom would dole out weekly chores for us. Ugh! I always had to clear the table, clean the bathrooms, & vacuum the stairs. Ugh!! I hated doing these chores but I did it cause it was my job. Once my job was finished I could go out to PLAY!!! :)
What is the first question an adult asks another adult when they meet?
"What Do You Do For a Living?"
After, I did my chores I ran outside to play with my friends. We played and if a new friend came, we didn't ask ?'s we PLAYED. There was no need to have ?'s answered. Bc any questions we had were answered by BEing.
When adults "play" are we really playing? Or are we doing a series of interviews? We ask the other person: "Who they are & what they do?" Then we TALK about who we are, what we do, who we want to be and who we think we are or who we should be....
Kids are inherently kids!!! A kid isn't defined by what they DO. No kid at a party hangs around the pizza table holding a juice box waiting for the ice cream cake to be cut talking about their allowance!
Why is it okay to do this as an adult????
Kids do their chores & then go outside to play. No kid introduces their friend as "This is Joe, he is a professional laundry folder." Nope kids just start playing together! Twenty years later & the same Joe shows up to a party & his friend introduces him as "This is my friend Joe the Corporate Accountant." Yikes!!!! How did we get Minimized to what we DO??? Is that ALL Joe is??? Bc twenty years ago, he was the fastest at the monkey bars, could get highest on the swings & knew exactly how to make his friends giggle at made up knock-knock jokes!
Kids aren't considered professional pool skimmers, professional snow shovelers, professional paper delivery girls...
But what we DO as an Adult defines us! Restricts us! Adults put such an emphasis on our OCCUPATION in life that we forget to OCCUPY life! & just BE...like a kid.
Do you remember your first job??? Wasn't it the most FUN ever!?!? It didn't matter What we did! We DIDN'T CARE! We were just Excited to work! We never feared being judged as a pizza delivery boy for life. We Never let it define us...
Yet, adults define themselves by what they DO for a living. A job is important but it DOES NOT have to define you.
Today, I challenge you to re-think your OCCUPATION. How you occupy your time has nothing to DO with DOING, or how you make your living. Define yourself by BEing. You aren't what you do for a living. Just show up, do your job & then go get your butt outside to PLAY ;) & Just BE :)
